Once upon a time a king planned to construct a big temple. He was very keen that the temple should be at its perfection in all means. He wanted to appoint best persons for all the works. He appointed few whom he know as best in their work from his kingdom. But he kept on search for the best artisans.
One day he went to hunting with his fellowmen. They saw a huge elephant running vigorously towards them. Everyone scattered out of their ways. The king managed to escape from the elephant and he went on hunting. But he lost his way back to the palace. He reached a small village at dusk. So he decided that night in the village.
He had a thought to find any best artisans or sculptors live in this village?. So he started to enquire about it hiding the truth that he is a king. Villagers referred to a person named Manikandan who lives in the village and make sculptures. And also everyone praised his workmanship. So the king decided to meet him.
The King disguised himself as a traveller. When he met Manikandan he was making a sculpture. The King started intracting with Manikandan and was watching his work. The sculpture which he was making was eighty percent completed. Only by then the King noticed that he was making same sculpture in the same size which was already in front of him.
The king asked the sculptor, “Why are you making two sculptures as the same one with same size? Do you need two numbers of the same sculpture?”
The sculptor said, ” No, We need only one. But the first one I made was not right I made a mistake in the sculpture.” The king searched for the faults in the sculpture he couldn’t find it. So he asked the sculptor again what was the mistake?.
Sculptor Manikandan replied, ” There is a small fault near the nose of the sculpture.” Now the king searched for the fault again near the nose of the sculpture. Now the king could recognize it after checking it so keenly. The fault was so minute that others couldn’t find it easily.
The king again asked him, “Where the sculpture is going to be placed?”. Manikandan replied, ” At a height of about fifty feet.”
Now the king said, “This is a very minute fault and moreover the sculpture is going to be placed at a fifty feet where no one can recognize the fault. Then why are you making a new one?”
Manikandan replied very politely,”I know many may not notice or couldn’t find this fault but I know well that I made a mistake. So I don’t want to hide it from others. It might happen to make a mistake when we work whether it is big or small it doesn’t matter. I feel it is wrong to hide it from others whether they identify my mistake or not I want my work to be perfect. And whenever we want to come up in life we have to be perfect with our work and character else we will lose our dignity. This was lesson I learnt from my teacher.”
The king was greatly amazed by his character and appointed him as the chief sculptor for the temple he was constructing.
Always your good deeds reward.
