In a town there was a wealthy person named Somasundaram. He was very stingy and greedy with money. He never provided fair wages to his employees.
Once, Somasundaram, in his yard, had a pile of coconuts that he wanted to sell in the market. When he went to bring his bullock cart to transport the coconuts to his house, he accidentally left behind his bag of money.
Upon reaching home, he realized that he had lost his bag of money while searching for it in the bullock cart. He frantically searched for the bag but couldn’t find it. In despair, he wondered what to do, as he couldn’t remember how he had lost the money.
Then, his wife said, Let’s announce that we will offer a reward to anyone who finds and returns the bag of money. Somasundaram thought it was a good idea and decided to announce it to the entire town the next day.
The following day, he gathered all the people of the town and announced that if they found the bag of money, they would be rewarded handsomely. The villagers, upon hearing this, were motivated to search for the money in hopes of receiving the reward. Despite their efforts, no one was able to find the bag of money.
After this incident, a week later, a merchant from a nearby town arrived in the village. His name was Boobalan, a person of good character. Despite being poor himself, he lived a respectable life and helped others in need.
As his agriculture was not yielding due to the lack of water in his land, he was unable to sustain his farming properly. Therefore, he decided to find another job to earn a livelihood since he had no money or experience in any other field. He chose to go to the neighboring town through a forest path to visit the temple there.
While traveling along the forest path, he encountered a pigeon lying down which was slightly wounded and had no strength to fly. Upon seeing it, Boobalan proceeded to a nearby pond, collected water, and offered it to the pigeon and tied the wound with a piece of cloth to stop bleeding. The pigeon was better then so he left it in a tree and continued his journey.
While passing through the path, he noticed a moneybag lying on the ground. Upon picking it up, he found a large sum of money. Immediately, he realized that someone had lost their money. Filled with distress, he thought about how he could return the money to its rightful owner and started contemplating about it.
When he reached the town, he inquired about the incident at a shop. The shopkeeper told him about Somasundaram, who had lost his money, and said, “If you return the money to him, he will generously reward you.”
Without wasting any time, Boobalan went in search of Somasundaram’s house. He found him and narrated the entire incident, explaining that he had found the money and the story behind it. Somasundaram was overjoyed to receive the money he had lost.
But Somasundaram lost the intention of paying any reward to Boobalan. He thought Boopalan couldn’t do anything. He wanted to send Boopalan without giving any reward so he made a plan. He opened the bag and said all his money were correct but he kept a diamond ring too in the bag and it was missing now. On hearing this people in the town get to know that Somasundaram was lying, So they took the dispute to the village head.
Somasundaram, Boobalan, and the townspeople stood in front of village head, seeking a solution. Somasundaram himself narrated the incident and mentioned that Boobalan was the one who had returned the money bag. But the diamond ring he kept in the bag was missing.
The village head heard the whole incident. He could the feel the honesty of Boobalan and Somasundaram’s thought of cheating who couldn’t raise voice against him. So after the trails the village stated as, ” As Boobalan says he doesn’t take the diamond ring and there is no proof to show that he has taken the ring or used it in anyother ways. And according to Somasundaram he kept the ring in the bag. So I come to a conclusion that the bag doesn’t belong to Somasundaram. Somasundaram’s bag with the diamond ring is yet to find and this money bag without the ring is claimed by anyone so Boobalan has to pay ten percent of it as tax to the village and can keep the rest of the amount.”
Poobalan took the money he received and returned to his own village and started a buisness and lived happily.
