In a village, there lived a landlord. Most of the fertile lands in that village belonged to him. One day, a farmer named Munian, a laborer, was working as a peasant. He had a small piece of land and a hut. Munian decided to ask for help to the landlord to cultivate in his small piece of land. So he went to meet the landlord.
Munian said to landlord, “Sir, I have sown seeds in all the lands except for my own small piece of land. My land alone seems to be lacking prosperity. Please grant me a small amount of seeds. I will also sow seeds in my land.”
In anger, he said, “I’m not interested in giving any grains to any one. And you justbandon the desire to be a landowner. Just be a laborer. Atleast you will get some wages to have some food. Else you will suffer for that food also.”
With sorrow, he returned home. To his wife, he said, “We couldn’t gain any grain from the landlord to sow in our land. So we and our children have to endure hardships. This is our fate,” he said with a resigned tone.
Meanwhile a sparrow constructed a small nest in the backyard of the peasant’s house.Seeing the nest, his wife said to him, “We fear for our shelter during storms and rain. Look, here it is, constructing a nest here.”
“Poor litte thing! Let it be. Once it gains stability, it will leave from here. We shouldn’t hinder its progress,” he replied. In the nest, the sparrow laid four eggs and all four had turned into chicks.
One day, a snake entered in to the nest. It captured the baby birds and started eating them. The mother saprrow of those baby birds was distressed.
Munian saw this and came there and killed the snake. But the snake, had eaten three baby birds already. One of the baby birds was lying on the ground and was screaming in pain.
He picked it up affectionately. Seeing that its leg was injured, he bound it up. He placed it again in the nest. He fed it at regular intervals. Tied up the injured place with some medicines.
After a few days, the injured bird’s legs healed properly. It flew away from there. The farmer and his family were still intheir poverty.
“How long will we fight this poverty? Will we not find any other way?” asked the wife to Munian.
At that time, He heard a faint sound someone outside their house knocked on the door. He opened the door, and there was a sparrow.
The sparrow had a seed in its mouth. The sparrow placed it in his hand and said, “Bury it at your doorstep. I will come back in a short while,” and it flew away.
It returned again. It brought another seed and said, “Let this reside outside your home,” and it flew away.
For the third time, it came with yet another seed and said, “Let this rest near the window and thanks for the love and affection you showed me,” and it flew away.
Just as the bird had told, he sowed all three seeds. The next day, in the morning, three large pumpkin vines had grown there. Seeing this, he was filled with joy.
He plucked the pumpkin and brought it. He split into two halves. What a surprise! Various types of delicious foods appeared from the pumpkin. Everyone joyfully consumed those tasty food. Once again, it joined and combined into one. Just as before, it became a complete fruit.
Happily, he said, “This is a magical fruit. Whenever we need food, we can split it, and food will be available. If we split it again, it will revert to its original state. Now we need not be longing for delicious food and need not be in hunger.”
“Bring the pumpkin in front of the house and let’s see what’s inside,” said his wife.He brought the large magical pumpkin and split it open. Using a knife, he sliced it into half. Within that came beautiful garments, precious jewels, and high-priced gems.
The third magical fruit was also plucked and split open. Golden coins appeared from that. Following this, he, his wife, and their children enjoyed delicious meals. They adorned themselves with expensive clothing and began building a very grand house.
Over the next few days, the landlord, realized that Muniyan had become immensely wealthy. So the landlord visited him and asked, “Hey, Muniyan! From where did you acquire so much wealth? Tell me the truth. “Muniyan explained everything that had happened, just as it occurred.
He arrived at his house. He thought of ways to accumulate even more wealth as he was jealous of Muniyan’s wealth. In the upper part of the house, he himself built a cage for birds. Fortunately a sparrow laid eggs, and four chicks hatched. Four baby birds came out of the nest.
