Long time ago, there was a king named Kalingan who ruled a kingdom called Punnaivanam. He ruled his kingdom wisely. He was very truthful to the morals. He spoke the truth always. He also expected his subjects to be the same. He doesn’t have a heir to succeed for the throne after him. So he decided to choose a right person for the throne after him from his kingdom.
He wanted to begin his hunt for a honest and truthful person from his country who can rule the kingdom after him. He didn’t get advice or discuss with others. He himself decided to choose the right candidate through different tests at different levels.
One fine day there was an announcement for different types of competition like sword fight, archery and also IQ test and personal interviews. The king wanted to find a person who is best in all the activities.
At last about 10 candidates were selecteed overall. All the ten were brought to palace and stood before the king. The king admired their talents and announced that these competitions were held to find a right person for the throne. And now it is a final test. Whoever wins this will become the next king after me. The candidates were happy.
And now the king announced the competition, ” I will give a seed to each one. you have to sow it a pot and grew it as a plant. Put your efforts to grew fertile as much as you can. Bring me the plant after six months. And I will check whose plant is grown well”. saying this king gave each one a seed.
There was a guy named Nandhan. He was one of the 10 candidates. He put the the seed in the pot and watered it daily. He was waiting eagerly for the seed to germinate. But he couldn’t see even after a week. so he sought the help of elders to grew the plant. He provided it with proper and manure and sunlight and watered it everyday. Even after all this his seed didn’t grow.
Days rolled. And finally the day arrived that all the ten candidates should show their plants to king today. Nandhan was very much worried that his seed did not germinate. So he went with the pot without a plant.
All the plants were kept before the king. The king chose Nandhan’s pot and asked him why he did not grew a plant?. Nandhan replied that his seed did not germinate even after he tried every possible ways. And at once the king selected Nandhan as the next King.
All the other candidates and courtiers were shocked. As all the others have grew the plant well but the King chose a person who did not grew anything.
Now the king said,” I gave a test to check your honesty and who speaks truth even in an unfavourable condition. I actually seeds which were already and boiled and dried. So there is no chance of growing that in to a plant. All the others have got some other seed of the same kind and grew it as a plant to win this competition. But Nandhan is the only one to admit the truth. So I chose Nandhan as the next king.
All realized the mistake and begged in front of the king to forgive them. Nandhan was happy to be selected as a king. His honesty and truthfulness rewarded him.
